Objectives
Abstract The research streams to be undertaken by the new academic and research staff are as follows:Power System Operation, Management, Control and Protection:The definition and understanding of innovative, self-contained power systems (SCPS); adaptive protection methods for micro-grids and SCPS; power network protection and control system integration; distributed intelligence for system automation; investigation of the 'intelligent power network' concept; system-wide fault management;communications architectures and measurement methods; power electronic systems and their impacts on SCPS design and management.Demand Side & Supply Side Coordination and Energy Efficiency:Optimised demand and supply matching in self-contained power systems (SCPS); integration of small-scale, low carbon technologies (PV, ?CHP, ducted wind turbines, fuel cells etc) within load centres; energy efficiency methods and technologies to reduce demand for energy and to reshape the demandprofile to bettermatch available fuel and power; new frameworks to direct energy source selections; investigation of integrated modelling and simulation methods for both demand and supply domains; impact assessment on the urban environment; multiple criteria analysis of the economic, technical and design elements in energy systems.Nuclear Engineering Process Measurement and Control:Reactor and associated plant monitoring, asset management and life-time assessment; safe/optimised operation andcontrol of existing nuclear plant generations; diagnostics for fission reactors including monitoring of reactor core integrity; investigation of graphite core behaviour and degradation characteristics; core structural integrity assessment; novel SCADA systems and intelligent diagnostic methods; novel sensors to monitor and control experimental fusion reactor operation; optical sensor materials capable of withstanding irradiation with enhanced dynamic ranges and sensitivities.We wish to build onthese three themes in two major respects: the addition of complementary research; and, the combination of these three activities in order to establish an international centre of excellence in integrated energy systems research
