Abstract Nuclear energy is being strongly promoted in China, and in Fujian Province, nuclear energy has been listed as one of three energy sources to be developed at a fast pace. In the near future, Fujian will become the first nuclear energy province in China. Nuclear waste is a by-product of nuclear power generation, and it is critical to properly handle the issue of waste disposal to protect human health, the environment and also to promote the sustainability of nuclear energy. This study will set up technical assessment guidance and toolkits for Fujian to build a nuclear waste disposal reservoir, and provide relevant policy recommendations for Fujian and the national government to adopt and expand the impact to other provinces. The UK is one of the most developed countries with long-term applications of nuclear energy and has established highly systematic systems including policies, guidance and technical toolkits for the construction and management of nuclear waste disposal reservoirs. This project is a collaboration with UK universities, industry and power plants in order for China to learn from the UK's experience and best practice to set up technological assessments of value in building nuclear waste disposal reservoirs for Fujian and China.
