Objectives
Abstract The aim of the project is to produce a GIS software tool that will allow utilities and urban planners to assess the impact of urban growth and to help manage that growth by optimisation of demand side management, energy saving measures, embedded generation and renewable resources. the project will concentrate on a particular UK city. The first step towards this aim will be a detailed statistical analysis of urban energy demand for a cross section of different consumers. Consumption will be analysed as a function of time-of-day, day-of-week and season. Attitudes towards various energy management strategies will be assessed. This social aspect will be important in estimating the uptake of energy management measures. The GIS software tool will act as a 'front-end' to a simulation model which will be devised to assess energy flows and pollution within the area and how they might be affected by different energy management scenarios. The simulation model will incorporate demand side management (DSM) measures such as variable tariffs, embedded generation such as photovoltaic panels and energy savings strategies such as low-energy light bulbs. Account will be taken of infrastructure limitations, capital and running costs to assess the optimal strategy for a given growth scenario
