Objectives (BD2210) The overall aim of this project is to determine whether is it possible to assess the air tightness of a building from the assessment of the detailed design and the workmanship on site, I.e. the sealing of unwanted leakage through the external fabric of the building.
Abstract The Building Regulation Approved Document Part L is under revision and it is expected that airtightness compliance will be required in non-domestic buildings. If this become a requirement there will be large number of building being designed, constructed and tested for airtightness. Market forces may increase the number of testing bodies and equipment needed to carry out these tests. However, other method of determining airtightness need to be investigated without resorting to fan testing. Thisproject sets out to explore the feasibility of estimating the airtightness of a building without resorting to fan testing. Utilising a non-test methodology will assist in introduction of airtightness standards and compliance in the UK's non-domestic sector.
