Abstract
Development of new small oilfields adjacent to established North Sea production is assisted by accurate prediction of sandstone reservoir porosity. Exceptionally high porosities interbedded with normal porosities, are common in many North Sea sandstones. The fundamental origin and lateral connection of such porosity is not understood. We hypothesise that: either porosity is preserved by early migration of oil into the field, or secondary porosity has formed by deep dissolution. New geochemical data and micro-scale isotope analyses linked to 3-D stratigraphy, will enable a better understanding and quantification of processes, applicable to exploration and production in the UK or world-wide.
