| Abstract | The proposed programme of work is divided into six work packages (WPs):WP1: Process, techno-economic and environmental analysis; WP2: Fuel specification and matching to conversion processes; WP3: Thermal reactor modelling; WP4: Minimisation of engineering risk; WP5: Co-processing biomass and biofuels; WP6: Biomass and bioenergy network. The research addresses a number of challenges in the utilisation of biomass. These include: (a) Feedstock options: - availability, preparation, identificationand meeting criteria of fuel quality. (b) Conversion and energy generation: - Improved biomass to energy processes attained via a number of strategies including: matching biofuels to power generation systems, modelling, and integration of fuel conversion processes with end use. (c) Economics and market issues: techno-economic optimisation of integrated systems; evaluation of the economic sustainable production of biomass; identification of economically attractive biomass conversion routes fortheUK situation.
