Background:
With the discovery of the one of the world’s largest offshore gas field in deep waters of the Krishna-Godavari basin of the bay of Bengal on the east coast of India in 2002, Naval Architecture, Marine and Offshore Engineering Departments in the country have been increasingly active in setting up teaching and research programmes to address the requir ements of the oil and gas industry for developing deep water fields. India, which produces less than 700,000 barrels a day of crude oil, has to import almost three quarters of the oil it uses, and is now putting greater emphasis on developing its deepwater oil and gas reserves. In the next five years, the country plans to have about 80% of its potential fields under explorati on from the current 44% aiming to increase domestic output and reduce its very high oil and gas import.

Visit Programme:
The aim of the visit is to establish joint postgraduate MSc teaching and collaborative research programmes in the field of offshore and marine engineering. As the deepwater oil and gas exploration and production projects require application of i nnovative and new cost effective technologies, and new approaches to development, construction, installation and operation of platforms this presents us with an excellent opportunity to carry out collaborative research and to set-up joint MSc programmes with academic and research institutions in India. We have already established collaboration for an MSc course in Marine Engineering with Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI), Pune in India.
