Abstract | The state of the environment in Eastern Europe is a major issue of global public concern. The most important cause of severe environmental damage in the region has been the environmental impact of industrial operations, particularly those associated with heavy industries, and power generation. This project is concerned with the effect that current economic changes in Eastern Europe are having upon the environmental impact of industry. It will investigate both direct impacts in the form of polluting emissions, and indirect impacts resulting from the use of materials and energy. It will study the response of industrial organisations of legislative and administrative measures to control industrial pollution and the impact of economic reforms upon the efficient use of inputs, especially energy resources. The project will examine organisational behaviour, attitudes, and decision-making in four heavy industrial enterprises in Poland and the Czech Republic. It will investigate both internal structures and processes and relations to external agencies, such as regulatory agencies, local government bodies, and financial institutions. The project will seek both to clarify the relationshipbetween economic change and environmental protection, and to develop positive proposals for the design of effective environmental protection regimes. | |
