Abstract | Against a background of increasing concern about how to maximise the value of foreign investment for regional and local economies, this study will examine the influence of foreign direct investment on the international linkages and exporting activities of local businesses. In particular, it aims to establish whether links between foreign investors and local businesses enhance or hinder the latters internationalisation. From the perspective of local companies, it will consider how links may alter the attitudes to exporting among local firms, by facilitating the development of new business strategies, markets and international R&D opportunities as well as the transfer of the skills necessary for undertaking exporting. The reseach will focus on two sectors within Scotland: electronics, and the gas/oil-related manufacturing industry. Fieldwork will consist of fifty company case-studies, involving both foreign investors and their suppliers. It is anticipated that the study will produce a conceptual model of the process of internationalisation among local suppliers of foreign investors which can be applied elsewhere, as well as contribute directly to the development of appropriate policy responses to enhance the benefits of foreign linkages within a local economy. | |
