The Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution DECC funding award requires delivery of the 1MWe battery by end March 2011, as a result procurement is well underway, additional functionality of this battery will feature in our Tier 2 bid. This Tier 1 bid secures the initial learning from the installation and operation of the battery and integration with local Demand Side Response to remove station peaks providing additional Demand capacity (in a similar way to managing a network load constraint).
Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution's Tier 2 element subsequently deals with the optimisation of potentially simultaneous modes of operation including:
- Renewable Generation constraint avoidance
- Power station operation optimisation (to reduce fuel consumption)
- Stability control including SVC functions
- Provision of ancillary services. This approach maximises the learning and provides the greatest leverage funding from Scottish and Southern Energy, DECC funding and the LCNF.
There is little use of electrical storage in the UK system at present, by introducing this battery to the islanded network of Shetland it will be possible to gain knowledge of the abilities and economics of using batteries to manage thermal constraints by demonstrating how it can reduce the peak demand on Lewick Power Station. Significant insight will be gained into the operation of MW scale batteries operating on a constrained distribution network with and without embedded power stations. This will be the largest battery installed and operating in the UK and as such will provide high quality validated learning for the industry.
