Ultrasonic NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is one of the key technologies enabling energy safety. While some inspections are now automated and robotic phased array systems are a reality, the data collected are still post processed by suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP), who use their knowledge and experience to evaluate and measure any suspect indications and write a standard inspection report. This project aims at developing AI that would enable man-machine cooperation in the field of ultrasonic NDT. The proposed deci-sion-making tool would not only represent a step-change in capability over current methods when embedded into existing or future portable ultrasonic diagnostic devices as well as robotic phase ultrasonic systems, it would also help with SQEP training and planning inspections, offering novel tactics for integrating and analysing diverse sets of data and information from many sources, in both real and virtual environments. Thus the project aims to help the energy community to meet the long-term challenge of providing a fast and cost-effective solution for locating, identifying and characterising defects in the nuclear and other process vessels.
