Abstract
Severe weather is the major cause of power outages in many countries including the UK and costs the economy billions of pounds a year. Moreover, since power production from renewables depends on weather conditions, it suffers from irregular, intermittence and unpredictable circumstances. Therefore, increasing the resilience and reliability of the grid in the face of the weather conditions is vital. The project aims to study, assess and prove the commercial feasibility of a newly developed Condition Monitoring technology for Smart Grid applications based on meteorological data. The unique feature of this technology is its novel data analysis technique and the associated control system in taking into account the regional meteorological data together with other conventional monitoring signals to control the power system operation in response to the weather conditions and hence protect the SG sub-systems and customers from long outages by undertaking predictive and targeted decisions and employing asset management strategies to increase availability of critical components.
