Abstract
Software able to dynamically integrate city models is necessary to enable city planners to design and shape city systems (energy, transport, logistics, waste, mobility, ICT) and ensure the greatest possible social and economic benefits through simulating the mutual interactions of all city models. The ability to simulate complex and interconnected city systems is essential to the implementation of smart city solutions. However, at present there is no software able to dynamically combine the interactions between diverse analytical models in a simple and adaptable manner. Existing city simulation tools are severely limited in their ability to integrate city system models. The most common approach requires labour intensive software programming, requiring a high level of programming expertise, thus limiting the development, availability and capability of bespoke simulation models. Even with experienced programmers, dynamically linking complex city system models is time consuming due to the level of effort in managing and verifying data flows across inter-dependent system models. Moreover, once a city simulation has been created it is difficult to adapt it to explore new city planning scenarios or to consider the impact of an additional system model. In this project we will prove the concept of an adaptable multi-domain analytical simulation framework and use it to combine diverse city system models and access open data sources for providing robust insight in the complex interactions between city systems. The concept builds upon TecLab, software that has been created to be a multi-domain simulation tool for science and engineering. This proof of concept will demonstrate the innovative software concept behind TecLab s intrinsic handling of cross-domain data dependencies and will explore its application to Smart Cities, which is a promising market for the innovative software framework.
