The project will analyse emerging patterns of subregional cooperation in Central Asia and the Caspian region, and examine Russian and Iranian engagement in them. It will explore Russian and Iranian perceptions of subregional processes in Central Asia, and how those perceptions inform their interests and policies in the region, as well as contribute to foreign policy transformation in these two important states. The research will generate and collate new data on both the development of subregional processes in the Central Asian region, and on the determinants and characteristics of foreign policy change in Russia and Iran. It will offer policy relevant analysis about how subregional initiatives in Central Asia are shaping national interests in the region and contributing to conflict prevention and the enhancement of security, and to diversity in trade and energy links. It will help to consolidate existing and create new scholarly ties, with new levels of access, between the researchcommunities in Britain, Russia and Iran. Project researchers, in collaboration with researchers and research institutions in the region, will analyse primary and secondary materials from Central Asia, Russia and Iran and conduct interviews with officials and specialists. Outputs will include seminars and conferences in the UK and the region, a co-authored book, and shorter publications
