UKPN aggregated smart meter usage

This resource links to an external website containing a dataset collection

Description:

Overview
This dataset is derived from UK Power Networks (UKPN) smart meter usage data, aggregated at LV feeder level. The data represents consumption per LV feeder, aggregated across a minimum of 5 smart meters, at half hourly resolution. The UKPN usage data has been combined with LSOA data for England and Wales, to provide the relevant Output Area for each reading.

The raw UKPN data is available from their Open Data Portal.

Methodology
The datasets have been generated using an pipeline to automatically collect new data as it is published. The data is processed, combined with the locational data described above, and output as parquet files for each calendar month.

Coverage and update rate
As of January 2026, UKPN currently publishes only a small sample of their service area each month (around 15 secondary substations, 21 LV feeders). Data updates do not conform to any regular frequency, and are several months behind real time.

Units
Aggregated usage is provided in Wh. All timestamps are UTC.

Acknowledgements
The development of the data pipeline was inspired by work on the Weave project.
