Objectives
Abstract The global effort to decarbonize energy production and transport has generated unprecedented demand for rare earth elements (REEs) used in technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles to such an extent that REEs are nowadays considered as critical minerals due to their importance in these technologies and their restricted supply. Discovering new deposits with economical concentrations of REE that could be mined in environmentally and socially responsible ways is thus vital to the energy transition. The major REE deposits in the world are associated with alkaline-silicate rocks and carbonatites formed in extensional intracontinental setting. However, the enrichment in REE in theses deposits are poorly understood, despite decades of research.While conventional petrographic and geochemical studies applied to REE deposits has already provided some key information about the nature of the fluids involved in REE enrichment in carbonatites, these methods have also shown some clear limitations and cannot be used to fully understand and quantify the processes involved in the enrichment of REE in alkaline magmas and subsequent transportation and concentration of REEs from magmas to economic deposits. ISO-REE project aims to explore the potential of novel REE and transitional stable isotope system as a key alternative to trace REE enrichment in magmas and REE transport and the speciation in fluids and brines. However, the use of these novel stable isotope systems is not straightforward as our understanding of their behaviour during the processes relevant to REE-deposit formation is limited. To calibrate the behaviour of these isotope systems and use them to develop a global process-based understanding of the formation of economic REE deposits, a multidisciplinary approach will be carried out by using theoretical computational work with state-of-the-art novel stable isotope measurements of natural samples from two well characterized carbonatite complexes
