This project is principally to adapt the existing SAFED Guide for truck drivers by conducting research of van operations and thereby to produce a new Guide appropriate for van drivers. The new Guide would form the basis of the SAFED scheme for van drivers. A secondary output is a pilot study training scheme for some 25-50 van drivers. This would 'trial' the draft Guide, be instrumental in finalising the Guide and provide some evidence as to the predicted success of the futur e s cheme.This pilot study would be an option for the Department to take up if the benefits are clear, based on the tender proposals.

The aims of the guide are to: Outline the elements of Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) training specifically relevant to the driving of vans Define the qualifications, skills and experience required by trainers intending to deliver the SAFED training programme to candidate drivers Explain the content, and assist in the delivery, of the one-day SAFED training course designed to improve the safe and fuel efficient driving techniques of existing van drivers
