Objectives
This tidal stream energy project will compare an axial, fixed pitch, bi-directional, variable speed turbine generator, using power electronics to match the output to the grid, with an axial, variable pitch, synchronous turbine generator system, the former being simpler to construct. The project will establish, theoretically, the extent to which the loss in energy conversion efficiency of the fixed pitch device is counterbalanced by a reduction in capital and O&M costs and whether thesystem is technically feasible and sufficiently economic to warrant further development. WUMTIA will do the hydraulic design of the fixed and variable pitch devices. Mechanical and electrical concept solutions and lifetime cost estimates will be provided by ALSTOM Power Ltd.. LOG+1 will manage the project, provide developer, O&M amd electricity market input and produce the report.
