Objectives
Abstract This consortium-based research project encompasses the search for engineering solutions to the technical problems of a high reliance on renewable energy resources, the development of economic ideas that support renewable energy, analysis of the social acceptability of engineering solutions and the exploration of scenarios for the far future of the electrical energy system (including the possible substitution of another vector in place of electricity). The consortium offers a unique opportunityin power systems research with its interdisciplinary nature including experts in economics, engineering and environmental areas. Research will be undertaken which is essential in an industrial sector that needs engineering solutions that enable it to operate in a complex and regulated market. The electricity supply industry has a role in a nation s ability to meet its Kyoto Protocol ambitions. The consortium will be able to undertake research that provides an unusually detailed view of possiblelong term solutions to the problems facing the industry and will be able to inform regulators and policy makers who need to create the incentives that will enable the industry to migrate to that future
