Three Visualisations added to the EDC

26/02/2026

Access to three new interactive data visualisations are now available from our Visualisations tab.

NESO Carbon Intensity Dashboard

Carbon intensity is a measure of how clean generated electricity is, being a measure of how many grams of carbon dioxide are released to produce a kilowatt hour of electricity. Different energy sources have different levels of carbon intensity, for example fossil fuels are highly carbon intensive, whereas renewables are carbon-free.

The NESO Carbon Intensity Dashboard contains four visualisations of this Carbon Intensity data for the UK and provides a view of the current landscape of carbon contributions of the Great Britain's electricity generation. The Current Carbon Intensity gauge shows the carbon intensity of Great Britain's electricity that is updated every 30 minutes. The History of Carbon Intensity of Generation plot shows how Great Britain has reduced its carbon intensity over the past decade or so, displayed as the intensity per week, and is also updated weekly. The Current Generation Mix and Carbon Emissions visual contains 2 pie charts showing what sources have been generating Great Britain's electricity in the last 30 minutes, and the carbon emissions of each fuel within this mix. The Carbon Intensity of Balancing Actions graph is updated every 60 minutes and shows the different between the carbon intensity of all relevant generators before and after a balancing mechanism is applied by the NESO to balance the supply and demand of electricity.

GridWatch

GridWatch is a dashboard that contains visualisations of UK grid data that covers many different areas. It contains visualisations in both Bar and Meter form for generation demand, demand %, generation from renewables and from carbon neutral sources, and the generation from 12 individual sources such as Solar, Coal, and Nuclear. This data is also represented in plots with resolutions of generation today and yesterday in 10 minute-averages, generation of the current and previous month in hour-averages, and the current and previous year in day-averages.

GridWatch contains additional information as well, such as the same set of visualisations can also be viewed for the GB Electricity National Grid CO2e Output per Production Type, and for Power Grid Frequency. There is also a section that contains information on all currently operating Power Stations, along with information on how to implement Widgets that contain National Gird information to a website.

Mining Remediation Authority Map Viewer

The Mining Remediation Authority map viewer allows you to view selected coal mining information in your browser graphically. This map viewer is divided into four individual themes. The Planning tab displays Coal Mining Reporting Areas which are regions identified as regions that are affected by either past or present mining activities. The Coal Mining tab displays Coalfield Consultation Areas which cover the known extent of coal mining activity and is used to determine whether a coal mining report is required for property transactions and the conveyance process. The Mine Water Heat tab contains information on areas that contain water that experience heating due to natural processes within mines. These areas have a particular interest due to the opportunity for managing this process to provide a continuous supply of heat for homes and businesses. The Metal Mines - England tab displays information on closed metal mines and includes information on certain treatment schemes and intervention methods related to these closed mining facilities.
