Meet the EDC Team: Vivek Mistry - Research Software Engineer

I am Vivek, a recent graduate from the University of York Computer Science department, who has joined the Energy Data Centre (EDC) as a Graduate Research Software Engineer (RSE). I am responsible for maintaining and developing the EDC, as well as continuously improving the platform to help members of the general public access energy data. What particularly drew me to this role, was the opportunity to embark on a technical refresh, as it will allow us to think about designing a system all the way from the UI to the infrastructure to help meet user requirements.

I am interested in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence (AI). I enjoy Software Engineering because I like cracking problems, and there's a real buzz that comes from launching a new bit of code. This will be my first time developing a fresh user interface from scratch and I am looking forward to the challenge. During University, my final year project focused upon applied AI to a new context, and I am hoping to work with Catherine (EDC lead) and Oliver (Data Steward) to see whether this new technology can ease data management processes.

In my first few months, I shall be looking at feasibility of adding new AI components to the system as well as developing themes and components for our new web interfaces.

I am looking forward to using my technical knowledge to help improve access to data to help energy research across the UK.
